Coaching is Teaching

In the most basic sense, coaching is teaching. The classroom is a field or court. The teacher is the coach. The practices are daily lessons and the competition is the assessment. The same principles that exist to get the most out of students in the classroom exist to get the most out of athletes in their particular sport. But so many of us view teaching and coaching as two separate entities. In reality, they are virtually the same.

How to Teach

Teachers go through years of training before stepping foot inside of a classroom. They are taught the fundamentals of education. They are taught the basics of lesson design, curriculum writing, differentiated instruction and assessment. These are all fundamental principles of teaching and any good, effective teacher incorporates these principles in their day to day work. So many teachers that also serve as good coaches incorporate the same strategies in their practices and games. Show me a good teacher and I will show you a good coach. Show me a great teacher and I will show you a great coach.

You Don’t Need A Degree In Education

You do not need to go back to school to get a degree in Education to learn the basics of teaching. In fact, the cornerstones of the profession are fairly simple and straightforward. The challenge then becomes applying the basic principles of teaching to your particular sport or skill set. The fundamentals are crucial to success.

Understand Concepts – Play Faster

Too often athletes are not able to play to their abilities because they do not understand fundamentals, concepts and game plans. Paralysis by analysis. The more the athletes understand, the faster they play. The faster and more loose they play, the more successful they are. Teaching key concepts is the most important element to allowing athletes to play fast.
